The first Saint Peter and Saint Paul Church was constructed of limestone in
the northeastern corner of Delaware county in 1868. The present Gothic
style cut-stone church replaced this church in 1906 when the new church was
consecrated. St. Peter and St. Paul became the first church
consecrated in the Archdiocese of Dubuque.
The intricate high altar holds a myriad of statues of angels and saints.
The three spires of the church can be seen from miles around, and the
interior of the church is exquisite with its dark woods and gold trim.
The church is among the Gothic churches of the area described and pictured
by Father Loras Otting in his 1980’s article in Palimpsest, the Iowa
historical magazine.
