Carl was born in Portage, Pennsylvania on 14 July 1917. He died on 26 September 1936 in Portage and was buried at Saint Bartholomew's Catholic Cemetery in Wilmore, Pennsylvania.  He was called Carl or Carly.  He was a good looking guy, the only on the family with curly hair.  Carl was a bright student, valedictorian and speaker for the 1935 graduating class of Portage High School.

His early death at the age of 19 years was a tragedy.  He died at home after having a kidney removed in a Johnstown hospital on Marcy 17, 1936, during the Johnstown Flood.  The water was so high that for a few days no one could visit him.  He remained in the hospital for three months, then returned home where he was bedridden for six months until his death.  His kidney problem developed while he was in Washington, D.C., where he went after graduation to seek employment while Brother Guy was making contacts to get him into college.  The kidney problem could have been the result of getting kicked in the kidneys while playing high school football.

While in Washington he stayed at the boarding house where his brother, Louis, stayed earlier while in Washington, DC. He worked for a dry-cleaning company that paid him $13.50 per week until he got laid off because of a drop in business.  Then he took a job as an elevator operator in a downtown hotel for $1 a day, which he quit after a month because he couldn't live on that salary.  He was working as a clerk at a soda fountain counter in a drug store for $15 a week until he quit to return to Portage for medical care.
