Mom was 42 years old when John, baby of the family, was born.  He was orphaned at age 16.  He is a 1947 graduate of Portage Township High School and attended college, getting a degree in Design Engineering.  He is a veteran of the Korean War.  John served in Korea with distinction as an enlisted man with US Army Communications, receiving the Bronze Star Medal for valor during combat, performing duties as a communications chief (click here for newspaper clipping).  He married his wife Peggy, who is from the Portage area, while attending college after military service.  After college he worked for two years as a draftsman with Landis Tool Company in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania.  He moved to the Washington, D.C. area to begin a career working with Melpar, Inc., who was later bought our by E-Systems, Inc., where he worked for 33 years as a design engineer until retirement in May 1991.

John is a great handyman who can do anything, and very skillfully too.  He's the only guy Pat knows who can paint a room without getting a drop of paint on the floor or his hands.

John and Peggy made their home in Springfield, Virginia, where they raise their kids, Greg, Paul, and Gina.  Peggy worked as a secretary for a coal mine company in Portage before marrying John.  She stayed home to care for the kids, who were near their teens before she began a new career as a working mother.  She worked with the Fairfax Hospital and the American Automobile Assoication Headquarters, and is currently with Freddie Mac as a fraud investigation assistant.  She expects to retire in the near future.  Currently both John and Peggy are in good health, and hopefully will have many more years of healthy happy days ahead of them.
