After graduating from Windber Area High School, David earned his B.A. degree in English (with honors) from the University of Kansas in 1975, where he was also elected  to Phi Beta Kappa.  He received his M.A. in English from the University of Kansas in 1977.  In 1981-82, he received a NEH Fellowship-in-Residence at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  He continued graduate studies in English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and obtained an ABD (all but dissertation) for the Ph.D. in 1987.

Since 1975, David has taught English at various levels of higher education:  the University of Kansas, Eastern Wyoming Community College, the University of Nebraska- Lincoln, and Truman State University.  He has published articles and reviews in College Composition and Communication, Prairie Schooner, and The Midwest Quarterly.  In April 1996, he arranged the visit of Johnny Sturm to Truman State University.  A first baseman for New York Yankees in the 1940's, Sturm spoke about the late Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak of 1941 as well as his experiences as a major leaguer who served in World War II and played exhibition baseball for the troops overseas.  Later that summer, David was a presenter at the Cooperstown Symposium on Baseball and American Culture, where he delivered a paper on "Baseball's Service to America in World War II."

His earliest recollection of baseball is listening to radio broadcasts of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1960's.  He is an avid baseball book collector, particularly baseball fiction.  His teaching experience includes a course on baseball in literature and films.  Since 1999, he has been a member of the Society for American Baseball Research. 

David and lives in Omaha, where he is the Director of Orientation and First Year Programs and adjunct instructor of English at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
